Easy Healthy Eating Plans That Work

Big Sigh!

Well here’s a screen shot of an email that I received yesterday…

800 calories or less, no carbs, grains, meat or dairy

Now I receive a lot of emails with people, quite frankly, doing really STUPID things trying to lose weight.  Things that don’t work.  Things that cost them a lot of money… and stress… and time.. and despair.

But for some reason this one really got to me.

It took me a while to think of exactly what to reply…

Should I reply what I really wanted to say…???

Or should I reply more gently…???

So here’s what I did…

Hi Sharen..

Thanks for your email.

I’ve spent quite a lot of time thinking about what you said and how best to answer it.

So, I’ve decided to do this.

I’ve written a couple of answers.

The first one is my immediate reaction.

The second one is less tough love.

Let me know what you think!

Answer 1:

WTF!!!!  %^*()*)(_)(_)()$#%#%%!!!!

Are you insane?

What the hell ARE you eating if you’ve cut out all that stuff.. rabbit food 24/7? Click To Tweet

Plus, of course you aren’t losing any weight only eating 800 calories a day.. you’re body has gone into starvation mode!!!  That’s basic nutrition info.

Who the hell is telling you to do all this stuff?

How much money are you wasting on this biokinectist???

Guess what?  You didn’t actually lose any weight at all a few months ago.. it’s still with you.  That’s not lost.  You haven’t lost any weight.  You still have it.  It’s NOT LOST!!!

Answer 2:

Hi Sharen

Thanks for your email.

It sounds like you certainly do need to lose some weight if you have type 2 diabetes and NASH.

However, I’m unsure why you are on such as restrictive and low calorie diet?

That would only be contributing to you not losing weight.. and also making it more difficult in the future as well.

Here’s any extract from my book “50+Recipes to Lose 50+kg… And Keep It Off” which explains it a bit more…

These diets work well psychologically because they are fast and furious – you know you don’t have to sustain them for very long. Let’s face it, if you were going to be tortured, you’d sooner have it over and done with than face slow agony. Of course, these diets have to be over quickly – you are consuming so few calories that if you followed them for more than a short time you would soon starve yourself to death! But while you are losing weight, you aren’t actually losing any fat because the body’s preferred source of energy is carbohydrates. For every one gram of carbohydrates that your body stores, it requires three grams of water to store it. That’s why cutting down on carbs reduces your overall size very quickly – you are mostly losing water. That is also why most low carb diets begin with a ‘no carb’ phase and guarantee you’ll lose a ridiculous number of kilos in the first week. You will – but three quarters of that will be water, not fat!

Moreover, if you aren’t giving the body any carbohydrates to use as fuel, then unfortunately the body’s next pit stop isn’t your fat supply; it’s your lean muscle tissue. Your body still thinks it’s living in the Stone Age. If you severely restrict your intake of calories, your body thinks you’re experiencing a famine. It doesn’t know how long this famine will last, or when the next one will be, so it “holds on” to its fat supply. It’s an instinctive survival mechanism.

Apart from not losing fat in the short term, the long-term consequences of very low calorie/detox diets are also quite dire. Burning lean muscle tissue is bad news. Lean muscle tissue is one of our major metabolism boosters. One kilogram of lean muscle tissue burns twice as many calories as one kilogram of fat just through its very existence. Moreover, in terms of size, one kilogram of lean muscle tissue is a lot more compact than one kilogram of fat (so you’ll appear smaller as well). Every 24 year old, or perhaps even 14 year old, who takes their first small step towards a ‘lose fat fast’ diet is actually making one giant leap towards a yo-yo dieting cycle which can totally “stuff” their metabolism – and their mind – in just a few short years.

After 24 hours of severe calorie restriction or detox, your metabolism slows by 5%. Click To Tweet Continue eating too little and your metabolism can easily slow down by 20% (some experts claim metabolisms slow by as much as 40%). Thus, while you will lose weight quickly, you will regain it all – and often more – just as quickly. A very low calorie/detox diet is the equivalent to your body as a hit of heroin is to your brain. You can only take so much before you start to see major long-term damage that can be difficult to rectify.

Now in terms of exercising with a biokinectist, is there some reason why you specifically do this? (eg some kind of injury or medical condition?)

If it’s just for weight loss (and you aren’t losing any weight), perhaps you would be better to exercise on your own?  Do you walk at all?

How much weight do you have to lose?

In terms of medical bills, one of my extended family members had NASH so I know how horrible it can be as it goes along.  In terms of type 2 diabetes, I have had many pre-diabetic clients that have actually gone off medication (on their doctors orders) because they have lost weight with me.

So I’m here to help you if you want it!!!

So where’s the easy healthy eating plan?

Now you probably clicked on this blog post because you wanted me to give you an easy healthy eating plan.  Guess what?  That’s not really what I do.  Why?  Because weight loss is really pretty simple.  What makes it complicated is that we are all individuals.  We all have different minds, different bodies, different taste buds and different levels of skill in the kitchen.

If I were to tell you eat Paleo (which a lot of weight loss experts do) then that would be great… if you had the time and money to do it.

If I were to tell you only eat clean (which a lot of weight loss experts do)  then that would again be great.. if you had the time and money to do it.

If I were to tell you that I would home delivery your meals each week that would be great … if you could afford it each and every week for the rest of your life and if you liked what I delivered and if the food filled you up enough so you wouldn’t get hungry.

I could go on.. but I think you get the idea.

The only expert in your own life is YOU! Click To Tweet

Which is not to say that you know everything about food and what’s healthy and what’s not because, chances are, if you are overweight then there is a lot of re-educating that needs to happen in terms of what you know about food (yeah you really do need to forget all the baloney – literally and otherwise – that you may have encountered before).  But there’s just NO WAY that I know what’s best for you.. or indeed, that anyone else does either.  Now, together we can work it out.  But by yourself you’re probably just floundering… and following a specific diet from someone else.. well how’s that been going for you again for the last x number of years??

So what's the healthy eating plan? Click To Tweet

The best healthy eating plan is one that works best for you physically, practically and psychologically.. and that you can keep doing for the rest of your life…. of 95% of the rest of your life.  Today, for example, I had a ginger nut biscuit, 2 chocolate coated coffee beans and a handful of almonds for breakfast.  Do I do this every day?  No.  Do I do this most days?  No.  But do I do it every so often?  Yes!  And I don’t beat myself up about it.  And I don’t think I’ve fallen off some proverbial wagon (where the hell did we get ‘weight loss wagons’ from anyway.. what are we.. living in the wild west in the 19th century or something?)

The thing is.. do you want something that’s easy to digest (figuratively speaking)… or do you want something that actually works for real life weight loss and works forever?

Do you want a one sentence weight loss plan?  That’s easy:  Count calories.  Count points.  Follow a 12 week challenge.  Do a diet.  Does it make you feel in control of your weight? Yes.. for a while.  Are you really in control of your weight doing it?  No.  Of course not.  Someone else is.  And if someone else is in control of your life (and that someone isn’t you) well guess what.. it’s not going to last.  No sh*t Sherlock!

They aren’t pretty. They don’t fit into a neat little box.  They don’t follow all the rules that dieticians and nutritionists and other experts say you should follow.. and they (mostly) don’t look all that pretty on Instagram either.

But they work.

They work for weight loss.

And, in the end, isn’t THAT way more important than anything else?
