Healthy weight loss for Osteoporosis

May is Osteoporosis Awareness and prevention month.  Healthy weight loss goes hand in hand with preventing this debilitating disease.  Dieting (one of the worst ways to lose weight) is also one of the best ways to develop osteoporosis  – because people  who severely restrict calories for a long time, are at increased risk for osteoporosis.

Exercise, on the other hand, is one of the best ways to prevent this disease,  because exercise plays an important role in maintaining or improving bone density for  healthy bones.  Exercise is also one of the best ways to healthy weight loss success.  Strength training (or weight bearing exercises) are especially useful for this and balance training, one of my other favourites in the exercise world, is also great for preventing falls.

So if you’re in need of a little weight loss motivation, why not consider the prevention of osteoporosis (and perhaps memories of a mother or grandmother affected by this disease) as something to help spur your weight loss journey further.
