How To Give Yourself A WeightLoss Mindset Makeover

Weightloss mindset

Weightloss Mindset.  Weightloss Motivation.  I can’t tell you enough how important – how essential – getting the right mindset is for successful, lasting weight loss. We think about weight loss as a really physical thing. Of course, it is – you do exercise, you fuel your body with nutritious foods, and the weight comes off. But is that all there is to it? No – your mental approach is just as important as the physical changes you make to lose weight. And not just to lose it, but to keep it off.

Weightloss Mindset

Weightloss Mindset involves a few different factors: how you feel about yourself, what you want to get out of your weight loss journey, why you’re doing it, how you stay motivated and how you push yourself to keep trying so you can achieve the results you want. If just one of these things is out of balance, it can send the whole train off course. If you’re not succeeding at weight loss in the way you really want to, it can be tricky to figure out where you’re going wrong and how to fix it.

Lots of people can have trouble with mindset, because the weight loss industry is so focused on the physical side of losing weight – that’s part of the reason plans and programs don’t work. I’ve had clients come to me after years of on-again, off-again weight loss attempts and say things like: I couldn’t stay motivated, I got bored, I didn’t get the results I wanted, I felt stuck, I hated what I was doing, nothing seemed to work, etc. etc. Sound familiar?

Well, I’m here to help. Giving yourself a mindset makeover is actually pretty simple. It’s all about the three Ps: Personhood, Perspective and Performance. Nail these three – in order – and you’ll be well on your way to long-term weight loss success.

Who Are You …. Really?

So let’s start with personhood. This is all about who you are and, maybe more importantly, what you believe about yourself. This is a big stumbling block for some people, especially when it comes to weight loss – you might think, oh, I’ve tried so many times and nothing ever works, so I must be the problem. But how much you value and respect yourself is pretty important. If you don’t have some faith in your own abilities, you can end up self-sabotaging. So step one: start backing yourself. Think about what you’re good at – and think about your failings too, so you can watch out for them and not let them trip you up. Forget your failed weight loss attempts – don’t look on them as failures, but as learning experiences. Now you know not what to do, right?

OK, so now step two: perspective. Get some! This kind of ties in with motivation, because it’s all about how much you really want to lose weight and what you’re prepared to do in order to make that happen. It’s about deciding how important your weight loss journey really is and then working for it. It’s about being prepared to make changes and take action. It’s about knowing what you want and why you want it. You can only really nut this out if you’re past the personhood stage – when you’re comfortable with yourself and what you can do, then you know what you want and how to make it happen, it’s onto step three …

Performance. This is where the magic happens, and where mindset translates into action – because with weight loss, nothing happens unless you make it happen. When you know who you are and you’re committed to what you want, you have a destination to work towards – and your performance improves. Because you’re in the right mindset now – you’re motivated, you’re clear-headed and you’ve got the knowledge and confidence to get it done.

Weight Loss Motivation

And what happens when you’ve nailed the three Ps? You just keep getting better! Your knowledge and your skills improve. When I started losing weight, I just did what I knew – I chucked out my junk food and I took up walking. As I lost weight and became fitter, I learned more about nutrition and exercise, and I kept adding to that knowledge base and getting better and leaner and fitter and more informed. And now, helping other people lose weight is my job.

If you don’t know who you are or what you want, you’re not going to get results – harsh but true. Until you’ve locked in that mindset, you’ll be going nowhere fast. But the three Ps give you a sense of direction and the ability to navigate challenges and take actions that’ll get results. So give yourself a mindset makeover today – get those three Ps happening and see what happens!
