Losing Weight is DUMB – an alternative to SMART goals for weight loss

Everyone talks about setting SMART goals when you try to lose weight or, indeed, achieve anything. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and have a Time frame attached to them.

I’m not a goal person. I think they just increase the sense of pressure. When I lost weight I didn’t set any goal at all, and I certainly didn’t set a smart one. However, recently I’ve come across the notion of DUMB goals – Dreamy, Unrealistic, Motivating and Bold. They sound cool. They sound inspiring. Don’t be SMART about losing weight, be DUMB instead.

Dream about the possibilities that being fit and healthy could bring to your life. Remember what it felt like to first fall in love. It was dreamy. It was all-consuming. Be consumed by your healthy life journey. Fantasize about the things that could happen. Dream.

Be Unrealistic. So many people say they’ll never fit into a particular outfit or size again. You can. If I had been set a realistic goal when I started my weight loss journey I wouldn’t be any where near where I am today because I wouldn’t have thought it was possible. Realistic goals are all about what you think or hope you can achieve. Being unrealistic means you can achieve more than you ever thought you were capable of. You can uncover your true potential.

Motivate yourself in whatever way you need to. It doesn’t matter what pushes your buttons as long as your buttons are pushed. Think about the last thing you wanted that kept you up at night or popped into your head first thing in the morning. That was motivating. That’s what you need to discover in yourself in relation to losing weight or living a fit and healthy life.

Be Bold (and beautiful too!). Being bold means thinking outside the square, acting beyond the conventional and achieving conspicuous results!

That was my first blog ever. I hope it was DUMB, not SMART!!!
